EMDR

Are you carrying the weight of a painful memory that shows up in your thoughts, your reactions, even your body?

EMDR helps your brain ‘feel it to heal it’ and reworks distressing memories so they no longer define you.

What Is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a type of therapy used to help people process and heal from traumatic experiences. It is particularly effective for PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) but can also be used for other mental health conditions.

EMDR involves recalling distressing memories while engaging in bilateral stimulation, usually in the form of guided eye movements, tapping, or sounds. This process helps the brain reprocess traumatic memories, so that they become less emotionally distressing and replaces negative beliefs (ie, “I am not worthy”) with more adaptive beliefs.

What EMDR Treats

What To Expect With EMDR

  • The therapist gathers information about your history and identifies target memories that you want to work on.

  • You will learn various coping techniques to help you manage distress.

  • The therapist helps you recall the traumatic memory while using bilateral stimulation (such as following their fingers with your eyes or tapping on the side of your knees).

  • Your brain naturally starts to process the memory, often reducing distress as new, more adaptive perspectives emerge.

  • You don’t have to talk in detail about the trauma; the focus is on what you feel and how your brain processes it rather than retelling the entire story.

  • Over multiple sessions, the trauma loses its power, and you may feel more peaceful, in control, and resilient.
